DESCRIPTION

Real deal Superbird; #s match. If you can appreciate originality, you will be very satisfied with this one. It\'s only had 2 registered owners in the last 36 years. I acquired it through a very knowledgeable Mopar collector. Also, Mopar survivor expert, Frank Badalson, has looked at this car and verbally verified the motor numbers and fender tag. Aside from a repaint, new top and maintenance, this is a survivor with original metal.

Superbird Story: In 1969 the Dodge Daytona was built to win NASCAR races. The engineers at Mopar squeezed all the horsepower they could out of their cars, so they called in a rocket scientist to increase speed with aerodynamics. Every bend curve and arch served a purpose. It wasn\'t for show, it was to win races and that is what it did. It was the first car to ever exceed 200 mph on a closed circuit track. Over at Plymouth their star NASCAR driver, Richard Petty, was handicapped by the limitations of the Road Runner so he jumped ship and went to Ford. In 1970 it was Plymouth that would carry on the Winged Warrior program with the Superbird. It was an attempt to lure back Petty and win races, both were achieved. As a matter of fact, it won so many races it caused its own demise. The top speeds these cars were achieving caused NASCAR to change their rules which brought a quick end to the Winged Warriors. NASCAR regulations said the manufacturers had to offer whatever they were racing as a production car to the public. They were rather obnoxious looking and impractical as an everyday car. They collected dust at the dealer showrooms, some dealers went as far as to remove the nose and wing. Today they are considered the holy grail of muscle cars!

EXTERIOR: This car still has its original metal! The aerodynamic package included the nose cone with flip up headlights and a chin spoiler, racing pins to hold the hood shut, scoops on top of the front fenders, windshield pilar covers, a flush mount rear window and of course the tallest wing put on a production car. Repainted its original Lemon Twist Yellow. Overall, the paint shows very well with a glossy finish. New bold reproduction decals too. The original vinyl top was recently replaced for the first time. The headlights open and close properly. 15 inch Rallye wheels look great and are wearing Goodyear Polyglass reproduction tires.

INTERIOR: Wow, what a nice unabused interior. The seats still have good cushion, the upholstery looks great. Door panels are looking good too. Headliner, rear shelf and trim looks great. The dash area fits nice, isn\'t cut or cracked. It has the full set of gauges including tachometer. Factory radio is in place, even the glovebox liner is original with factory ink stamp. Very desirable bucket seats and console with floor shifter. Believe it or not most have bench seat with column shifter. C16 on the fender tag indicates console.

ENGINE COMPARTMENT: VIN #s matching, casting codes and dates line up as well. It\'s a 440 Super Commando making 375 hp. Stock manifolds, valve covers and air complete with the Super Commando pie tin. It features power steering and brakes. Complete with fan shroud, secured battery, hooked up washers and of course the \"beep beep\" horn! Solid engine bay with fender tag attached.

TRUNK COMPARTMENT: Rock solid metal, the trunk floor looks to be original which is uncommon. It has the correct bracing for the wing and a rallye wheel spare. We installed a new mat and weatherstrip.

UNDERSIDE: Under this bird is rock solid original metal. The floors, frame rails, inner rockers all look uncut. Mechanics have been maintained as needed. We replaced the fuel tank and serviced the trans. Someone else replaced the shocks recently. The exhaust looks solid with correct tips. Brakes are functioning properly, and it has disc in front, e-brake is hooked up. Looking up at the motor we verified the correct casting code, date, and matching VIN. The 727 Torqueflite automatic is clean and was serviced. In back is the original rear end with 3.55 Sure Grip gears.

SERVICE: We inspected this car and rebuilt the carburetor, replaced the spark plugs, gave it an oil change, cleaned the pulleys and tightened the belts, replaced a heater hose, gave it a transmission service, repaired tachometer, replaced fuel tank and sending unit, repaired turn signals, replaced vacuum hoses and repaired switch to the headlights and replaced the vinyl top.

Without a doubt, one of the wildest, most intriguing cars to come from the muscle car era. Whether it\'s for your collection or to hit the shows and ice cream parlors, you will be noticed! Not to mention it is an investment and this one is legit. I\'ve not seen them go anywhere but up!
