1966 Ford Mustang Hardtop
For consignment, a 1966 Ford Mustang hardtop, with unknown miles, and born in Metuchen, New Jersey. Our consignor states the engine is a 347ci stroker and an enormous teardrop power bulge on the hood broadcasts that this is not your average \'66 Stang.
Exterior
Burnt Orange has been used on late model cars for the past 20 years or so and looks great on this classic Mustang. What stands out, and up, is the teardrop hood bulge, looking a bit like a Thunderbolt race car and is opened up in the back for a ram air effect. The hood tops a horseless grille, now with honeycomb design and the wrap around chrome bumper. The bumpers, window frames, and metal hardware all look good on the car and the faux vents ahead of the rear wheels are in good shape too. Black 15-inch Weld wheels are up front and 15-inch Weld Prostars are in back and they are deep, wearing 29x15.5x15 tires. Out back, its standard Mustang with the exception of a narrowed axle and those enormous meats tucked underneath. We note the wipers have been removed. Overall, the paint is presentable but we note some imperfections including black droplets on the roof and rear quarter, a sizable touched up paint chip on the roof as well as a scratch, some paint run, bubbles down low, chips, underpaint, and some uneven body filler on the rocker panel, quarters and doors.
Interior
Standard door panels adorn the inside of the car although at least one is enhanced with a billet flame shaped window crank. Inside, the low back vinyl bucket seats are in place and the driver\'s seat is torn in several places. This is a rear seat delete car thanks to being tubbed and housing a roll cage. Back up front, we encounter a grippy steering wheel with a Bosch tach on the column, fronting an updated Mustang dash that now has red metallic paint framing around more Bosch gauges and the standard horizontal speedometer. Oil and temp gauges are in the center on a faux carbon fiber panel, rimmed in red. A B&M handle tops the shifter that is floor mounted amongst black loop style carpet in good condition. While we\'re down here, we note the pedals are lacking rubber caps. In the trunk, a fuel cell and battery share the space.
Drivetrain
More red accents are found under the hood where a stated 347ci V8 stroker engine resides, fueled by a 4-barrel carburetor and moved into motion by a 5-speed manual transmission. The heater core has been bypassed. Power brakes are employed to slow this rod with discs in front and drums in the rear.
Undercarriage
Driver quality but clean underneath and the transmission is painted red! Headers travel a short distance to a pair of FlowMaster mufflers and that\'s where the exhaust ends abruptly, under the car. A few drops of oil at the drain plug, but the transmission and rear differential are dry. For suspension, the car wears coil springs up front and ladder bars with coilovers in back, attached to that narrowed axle.
Drive-Ability
A raucous roar accompanies the turn of the key and this high hooded orange beast is ready to go! We roll those big tires out of our garage and onto the test loop where straight aways are surefooted and plants and turns remain flat. There\'s acceleration on tap here and we\'re thinking race seats might be a nice addition. Meanwhile, it runs, stops, and tracks well and we confirm consignors note about the light wiring harness needing to be installed. All other functions operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
This is an attractive car, but it also means business. It\'s got all the makings of a serious street rod and could use a few final touches, but this could easily be driven and enjoyed as is, and still garner attention and yield some fun. This is one Burnt Orange that is Jersey strong and ready to roll out of here with a fat back and bulging hood.
