DESCRIPTION

Rest assured, you would likely never encounter another one like it at a car show or cruise night in the Midwest. \"It\" in this case is Citron\'s D Super sedan. Made between 1970 and 1975, the D Super was the company\'s low-priced model but came with the DS-21\'s engine. The D Super replaced the ID as the economy model.

This car has been cosmetically restored some time ago and finished in Star White (code AC097) over Royal Blue (code AC619), the car\'s paint and trim are in overall very good order there is some bubbling on the hoods paint. The delicate-looking chrome wraparound bumpers fit tightly to the body and the engine bay is good, original order. Being European, it has inner headlights which steer with the vehicle\'s front wheels.

This French wonder rolls on black letter radials, each one mounted to a steel wheel and topped with a factory cover. All of the wheel covers and tires are in good, original order. In conventional cars, hydraulics are only used for braking and power steering. This is also the first mass-produced vehicle that incorporated disc brakes, ensuring safety and reliability. In the DS, they were also used for the suspension, clutch and transmission.

At a time when few passenger vehicles had independent suspension on all wheels, the application of the hydraulic system to the car\'s suspension system to provide a self-levelling system was an innovative move. This suspension allowed the car to achieve sharp handling combined with very high ride quality, frequently compared to a \"magic carpet.\" At rest, Citrons so equipped will slowly sink to the pavement as the engine-driven hydraulic system is depressurized.

Under the hood is a 2.2L four-cylinder engine with five main bearings. Since then, this powerplant has been modified to burn propane/LPG or regular gasoline, which not only enhances the economic advantages while in use but also delivers a much more environmentally friendly result. The motor is backed by a four-speed manual transmission. There is a LPG tank in the trunk and several other components for the conversion. We have not tested the car as such.

Inside, the blue and white cloth interior needs some TLC in places but the front buckets with oversized armrests look comfortable. Fuel gauge is inop and the car does have a small hydraulic leak. There are black floormats and a unique one-spoke steering wheel, another Gallic signature. The blue and white inner door panels are in good, original condition, as is the black dashboard, complete with Distance d\'Arret (Stopping distance) gauge and other Jaeger gauges.

Cars rarely come more eccentric than Citron, which can endear themselves to some customers. If you\'re one of those, then you should visit MotoeXotica Classic Cars to look this one over for yourself.
